- DIED. James Markham, 46, Paris bureau chief for the New
- York Times; from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound; in
- Paris. After starting his career as a stringer in India for
- TIME, Markham joined the Associated Press in 1967 and reported
- from Burma, Afghanistan and West Africa. He covered the fall of
- Saigon, the Iranian revolution and Israel's invasion of Lebanon
- for the Times, and was due to become the paper's deputy foreign
- editor in September.
