  4.     DIED. James Markham, 46, Paris bureau chief for the New
  5. York Times; from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound; in
  6. Paris. After starting his career as a stringer in India for
  7. TIME, Markham joined the Associated Press in 1967 and reported
  8. from Burma, Afghanistan and West Africa. He covered the fall of
  9. Saigon, the Iranian revolution and Israel's invasion of Lebanon
  10. for the Times, and was due to become the paper's deputy foreign
  11. editor in September.
